Mathews in serious doubt for final ODI, T20I series

George Bailey's unbeaten 90 combined with John Hastings' six-wicket haul handed Australia a massive six-wicket win over Sri Lanka to take the One-Day International series at Dambulla with one to play. However, Sri Lanka were dealt with an even mightier blow as their captain Angelo Mathews is in serious doubt for the fifth one-dayer and the subsequent Twenty20 International series after suffering from a suspected calf strain. Mathews, on Wednesday (August 31), was batting on 28, when he pulled up short after setting off for a single. He, however, resumed batting after having received treatment but soon figured he was unfit to carry on and left the field with Sri Lanka at 115 for 3 in 27.1 overs. The all-rounder made his way back into the middle in the 48th over and belted a couple of boundaries. "Unfortunately he's got a calf strain," Dinesh Chandimal, the stand-in skipper, confirmed after play. "So he's going to have a CT scan tomorrow and the physio is going to tell us whether he can play or not. "He is unlikely to play in this series, unfortunately." Although Mathews had a lean series with both bat and ball, having scored 99 runs across four matches at 24.75, and picking up just four wickets in as many games, Sri Lanka will miss the experience and expertise going into the T20I format. Sri Lanka and Australia will contest the fifth and final ODI on Sunday (September 4) in Kandy. The following two-match T20I series will be played in Kandy and Colombo on September 6 and September 9 respectively to wrap up the tour.
